Do I have to scale the patterns up or down?
Absolutely not, no scaling is necessary. The patterns are full size. We also include a detailed diagram on how to put them all together to make it as simple as possible.

Do I need special paper to print out the pattern?
All you need to print out the patterns is a standard home printer. The PDF file contains a very detailed full color picture tutorial (instructions demonstrated by photography) as well as all pattern pieces. The pattern pieces, themselves, are divided up in sections that will fit onto a regular A4 International piece of paper. After printing, they are just taped or glued together to form the full patterns…its extremely simple to do!

I don't have a printer. Can you mail the pattern to me?
No, we do not currently mail out printed patterns. You can take the ePattern files to a local print agency and they would be able to assist you in printing them out.

Do you make your patterns on a computer?
I don't, but my pattern maker does. The patterns are first drafted by me from my original design, I draft by hand using traditional pattern making techniques of the time period. Then my pattern maker scans them into his pattern making software to produce a professional looking end product.

I am novice at sewing, can I sew your patterns?
The Tailor's Apprentice and Stitch Up History pattern instructions are created to help you sew your outfit up, with images and text provided. However, basic sewing skills are necessary. You need to know how to operate your sewing machine and we recommend staking our online course Lilly Rose to learn how to sew a vintage dress in a vintage style. Beginner, intermediate and advanced patterns are clearly marked in the item descriptions. The patterns are designed for varying degrees of experience but I strive to make them as simple to understand as possible. Each step is clearly described and assumptions of knowledge are not made. Although, we do our best to explain everything as clearly as possible we realize that what makes sense to us may still not make sense to you so we also offer full technical support if you get stuck. Just send me an email and I’ll get back to you quickly.

Do I need an overlocker (serger)?
Definitely not! I don’t use over-lockers (sergers) to sew reproduction vintage or historical gowns, instead I use an electric vintage sewing machine, or I hand stitch. You could use an over-locker, but be aware that the pattern has been specifically designed to use more traditional techniques, so your results may not be exactly as expected. I use finishing techniques of the 1940’s, either blanket stitch, pinked seams, flat felled or French seams etc. These techniques will be shown throughout.

I love your designs but I can't sew! Can you make clothes for me?
Not at the moment, The Tailor's Apprentice and Stitch Up History, is selling sewing patterns only. But we have every intention of establishing a Bespoke dressmaking service, creating gowns in the style of the vintage or historical period of the patterns. Please join our mailing list [link to newsletter] to be kept informed when the service will commence.

Can I sell products made from your patterns?
Yes this is possible, but not without permission. Without my permission, you do not have the right to create clothes from The Tailor’s Apprentice patterns to sell anywhere. If you are interested in making these patterns to sell at local markets or Etsy or somewhere similar, please contact me, I am always looking for good dressmakers and possibilities of shared collaboration are many. Please contact me to find out more.
